Exploring Heritage Trunks: Barbara Clelland Stewart’s Journey

How many trunks have we posted about now? Two or three? Regardless each one of these trunks we talk about brings forth the incredible journeys of our heritage from across the world.

This trunk belonged to Barbara Clelland Stuwart (Allison) (donor’s grandmother) who was born in County of Lauark, Scotland 1889/08/05 and died 1964/08/15. It was built for her by her father (donor’s great-grandfather) when she was 5 years old (1894). Barbara married Hugh Henderson Stewart in Bishopbriggs, Scotland on June 6th, 1906. The couple sailed from Glasgow on July 7th, 1906 on the S.S. Mongolian of the Allan Line and arrived in Quebec on July 18th, 1906. The trunk was used to bring all her belongings to Canada. They made their way out West to Gwynne where Hugh’s brother, John Stewart and his wife Jean Brodie, lived and stayed with them until Hugh and Barbara purchased a piece of land West of the Wetaskiwin water tower. John helped the couple build a new house on this site.
