A Glimpse into Wetaskiwin: Early 1900s Community Insights

To restart this little series, I decided to share my favourite shot of the young community of Wetaskiwin. This photo dates to ca. 1901, before Alberta was even a Province and we were still a part of the North West Territories. There is likely not much in this photo that you recognize today, with the possible exception of Main Street (to the left of the old Driard Hotel) and 50 St., or what was then known then as Railway Street. Where these two roads intersect, you can see Wetaskiwin’s first train station.  This combination station and freight house was a typical site every 20 miles or so along the Calgary and Edmonton Railway. All were constructed from wood with a similar design in a matter of weeks. By 1914 this building was replaced with the Train Station we see today, and the location moved from the intersection of these two major routes.
