Donation of Historic Friendship Quilt to Heritage Museum

This week the Heritage Museum got a Donation from Carol Beswick, she wrote us a card about the history of the quilt:

In January of this year, I contacted your museum to see if you would be interested in a textile know commonly as a “Friendship Quilt” made by ladies from Rosyth, Hardisty, Hughenden, Amisk and other local communities.

The quilt was made for my mother Lillian May Burpee in about 1940 when she left the community as a young school teacher to marry my father Thomas Lee Beswick in Spring Coulee.

As a child I remember my Mother Lillian and her mother Leora May Harmon Burpee speaking these names that are signed on the quilt blocks.

Hopefully families will see names they recognize on this quilt.

Thank you for accepting this reflection of the best of Alberta Community Friendship.

Thank you, Carol, for your donation. We are currently displaying the quilt in our temporary gallery on our main floor on the stage. Come into the museum to enjoy some of our amazing local heritage and beat the summer heat in our air-conditioned building.
